Best Available 92% - 100%
When a handset finds itself in our best available selections you will know it is a top handset. Now our defination of a top handset might be different than yours. mobile Contract Price can sometimes pay a big part in the handset landing here.
Excellent Handset 85% - 91%
This handset is for Mr and Mrs average. Do not be mistaken, handsets here are not to be seen as second best. They have perhaps fallen into this category due to our testing, however, I am sure anyone that buys a handset in this section will be extremely satisfied.
Good Option 71% - 84%
We also see this as the why not section. What we mean by this is, why not go for it! It will be a good all rounder but perhaps lacks being a sat nav phone or one with another important feature. However, if you dont need high end gadgets you could award points differently and these handsets could easily be in the higher brackets. Dont ignore our good option handsets!
Boring 50% - 70%
The boring section is perhaps not wording everyone would use but it is what we think of the phone! Boring to us dont is not necessary boring to everyone, if your after no flash or just a basic phone then if its in here it may still be a very good handset and work a treat for your. There might be some of the higher end handsets in the boring section due to lack of workability and boring features that there is no need for. A handset in our boring section might also be due to the fact the handset hase been marketted by the manufacture as the best thing ever and in our experience it the handset has been a flop!
Avoid 50% and below
I guess if we have reviewed handsets and they land here that means STAY CLEAR. The phone will be about as much use as 2 tins tied together with a string!
How we Give a Review Score
To score a phone honestly we have to create different categories. It is not fair to give a £50 phone the same review test as a £500 phone. With this in mind we have our phones in 2 categories A and B.
Category A Handsets will be handsets that are marketed as top end handsets by the manufactures and networks.
Category B Handsets are handsets with a lower Market value. Some of these handset may not have internet and some of the other review requirements. Where this is applicable the internet points will be split between menu usability and reviewers enjoyment to give an accurate score.
Looks (20 Points) -
Lets face it appearance is the first thing that attracts us to anything. It would not matter if our phone could run Nasa, if the phone does not look well we will not buy it. Looks are top for point scoring.
Featurers (15 Points) -
The phone must do things and interact with us in a positive way. The more features the more points.
Ease of Use (10 Points) -
If its difficult we get annoyed, it is that simple!
Battery (5 Points) -
A good phone needs good life. My first ever mobile phone had 6 hours standby from fully charged! Standby times are now weeks rather than hours. A battery must last a minimum of a full day hard working from calls, taking photos, texting, internet usage and GPS.
Applications (5 Points) -
We are all geeks when it comes to our mobile phones. Also we like to be well organised, with so many top phones around applications for them is perhaps the biggest thing to hit the mobile world since the mobile phone itself.
Internet User Experience (5 Points) -
Internet on a mobile is great however, if the experience is poor then we point this out to our users.
Internet Speed & Connection (3 Points) -
Internet speed is important, however, with the flexibility mobile internet provides we feel a slower connection is not a deal breaker.
Texting Experience (5 Points) -
Texting is the new talking. There is nothing more frustrating than having a clunky phone for texting. Equally there is nothing more pleasant if a mobile is smooth to text with!
Menu Usability / Controllability (10 Points) -
We feel this is one of the most important things about a mobile phone. Getting your way around a phone must be simple, if getting your contacts is tricky or finding features such as the alarm is not straight forward then the phone must loose points.
Main Feature Usability (10 Points) -
If a phone has one or more main features that it is getting promoted for then they better be good! If its the camera or something like GPS then we need to be satisfied with this.
Reviewers Enjoyment (10 Points) -
Some gadgets we just cannot get enough of. If this was the case during the review that we kept wanting to play around with the phone there is up to 5 points available.
Like / Dislikes (2 Points) -
Here the reviewer can drop 2 points or add 2 points if they had an overall like for the phone. If they have a dislike 2 points will be taken away.
Our Feel For Value and snags if any -
Value is based on what you get within the handset. Also, contract types and costs. If you get the handset free on a contract with decent credits then this produces value. If the phone has a good payG price then this is value. For ourselves the value must be what you get in the phone with features against what price it is marketed on contract. A handset can provide good value but poor user experience so even at 10 points for value a handset may still struggle to get a top overall grade.
