We recommend the HTC HD Mini handset for age 11+.
It is no longer unusual for mobile phone manufacturers to release mini versions of their popular handsets. HTC, for instance, gives us the HTC HD Mini handset. Judging by the spec sheet, you will notice that this has a slower processor and is physically smaller than the HD 2. But are these the only major differences that you will notice? How will the HD Mini fare when it comes to features? You can find out now by reading out HTC HD Mini review.
17 Points Looks -
Review HTC HD Mini Looks (Max 20 Points)
The HTC HD Mini handset, as we said, is smaller than the impressive HD 2. This means that it pretty much looks like most touchscreen mobiles you see in the market today. Nothing surprising, nothing that will make your gaze at it in admiration for more than a minute. Still, it is classy and felt great in our hands.
13 Points Features -
Review HTC HD Mini Features (Max 15 Points) This mobile boasts of a capacitive touchscreen that measures 3.2 inches. It also has 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth, and a microUSB. It runs on Windows Mobile and has a memory of 384 MB RAM and 512 MB ROM. This is expandable for up to 32GB. It has a 5MP camera, stereo FM radio, media player, Pocket Office, and GPS support. Sounds like everything you'll need to have a great mobile, right?
Well, not quite. We still would have wanted a great DivX video support. A secondary camera would have been nice as well. Voice dialling would have been great, too.
10 Points Ease of Use -
Review HTC HD Mini Ease Of Use (Max 10 Points) We have to admit, though, that using the HTC HD Mini handset was really easy. Easy and fun, particularly. From the easy layout of the menu to the sensitive touchscreen, we have no complaints about this aspect of the HD Mini.
5 Points Battery -
Review HTC HD Mini Battery (Max 5 Points) You can easily last up to 7 hours on talk time with this handset. That is very impressive if you ask us. We fiddled with the mobile for several days and the battery held its own.
5 Points Applications -
Review HTC HD Mini Applications (Max 5 Points) Full points for this aspect because there are many WinMo apps for you to download. This handset also comes with preinstalled apps that you will enjoy using. The apps we loved the most were the ones for social networking, the YouTube app, and the WiFi router.
4 Points Internet -
Review HTC HD Mini Internet User Experience (Max 5 Points) You can use IE or Opera to browse the web with the HTC HD Mini. The problem, of course, is that both browsers are not perfect. Opera has no Flash support while IE has its fair share of weaknesses, too.
3 Points Internet Speed -
Review HTC HD Mini Internet Speed & Connection (Max 3 Points) When it comes to connectivity, the HD Mini is an equal match to its predecessor. So if you got a good 3G plan, you will surely love surfing the web with this handset. If you can find a plan that will give you free WiFi access, all the better.
5 Points Texting -
Review HTC HD Mini Text Messaging Experience (Max 5 Points) Text messaging on the HTC HD Mini is simply fabulous. On portrait mode, you get three options when it comes to the keypad --- alpha-numeric, half-QWERTY, or full QWERTY. Switch to landscape mode thanks to the accelerometer and you have a full QWERTY keyboard for texting.
10 Points Menu -
Review HTC HD Mini Menu Usability / Controllability (Max 10 Points) The menu is something truly admirable, too. Thanks to the tabbed interface, browsing the mobile will not be met with difficulty. Some of the tabs that we thought made for great menu usability were the People, Settings, Messaging, and Photo and Video tabs.
9 Points Features Usability -
Review HTC HD Mini Main Feature Usability (Max 10 Points) Now this is smartphone and there is just too much going on under the hood if you have never owned one before. The features, however, are really easy to get to know. Some of the features that were great to fiddle with were the camera, browser, and GPS.
9 Points Enjoyment -
HTC HD Mini Reviewer's Enjoyment (Max 10 Points) We miss the large screen of the HD 2 but this handset was impressive, too. It seems that the processor and size were the major differences anyway, and we sure found this mini version a delight to use.
2 Points -
Like / Dislikes (Max 2 Points) Loved this, of course. We are always down with handsets that offer variety when it comes to pricing and looks.
92 Total Points Review -
Final Thoughts on the HTC HD Mini So can the HD Mini hold its own against its predecessor? Can this mini smartphone compete with other touchscreen smartphones out in the market. Yes and yes. As you can gather from this HTC HD Mini review, there is only little we did not like about the handset. Sure some features were missing but those are things you can live without, trust us. And we should also mention that getting this handset on a pay monthly plan now will offer you a chance to take it home without paying extra charges. On Vodafone, a £25 plan will give you a free handset, 300 minutes, and unlimited texts. Contract length is 2 years and we are certain that you will still be in love with the HD Mini until the very end.
